THE FIRST EXPERIMENT

It took nearly a century before Astaroth could test the Grimoire's true capabilities. He sought not just any man, but a creature capable of suffering beyond the limits of the flesh: someone whose empathy was so profound it could turn into condemnation. He found it in Ludovico Ganassa, a traveling actor. Six times Astaroth tempted him, offering him glory, wealth, dominion, and every other vanity capable of bending men. Six times Ludovico refused. Then the demon realized that he should not corrupt him, but break him. He kidnapped Selene, the woman Ludovico loved, and imprisoned her in the sky as a nebula, leaving her visible only on moonlit nights: close to the eyes, unreachable by the hands. The pact was simple: Ludovico would serve Astaroth, and only after delivering 216 souls would Selene be freed. Desperation did the rest. Ludovico organized a grandiose spectacle, filled the theater with spectators, and set a fire, killing 252 people in a single night. But Astaroth did not consider the tribute valid: the souls, he said, could not be chosen by Ludovico; he would name the chosen ones himself. For this attempt to defraud him, the price was multiplied: no longer 216 souls, but 46,656.
From that night, Ludovico was the Grimoire's first experiment and the demon's first mistake. He vowed to himself that he would find a way to free Selene and overthrow Astaroth. 


IL PRIMO ESPERIMENTO

Ci volle quasi un secolo prima che Astaroth potesse mettere alla prova le reali capacità del Grimorio. Non cercava un uomo qualunque ma una creatura capace di soffrire oltre il limite concesso alla carne: qualcuno in cui l’empatia fosse tanto profonda da potersi trasformare in condanna. Lo trovò in Ludovico Ganassa, un teatrante itinerante. Per sei volte Astaroth lo tentò, offrendogli gloria, ricchezza, dominio e ogni altra vanità capace di piegare gli uomini. Per sei volte Ludovico rifiutò. Allora il demone comprese che non avrebbe dovuto corromperlo, ma spezzarlo. Rapì Selene, la donna che Ludovico amava, e la imprigionò nel cielo sotto forma di nebulosa, lasciandola visibile soltanto nelle notti rischiarate dalla luna: vicina agli occhi, irraggiungibile alle mani. Il patto fu semplice: Ludovico avrebbe servito Astaroth e solo dopo avergli consegnato 216 anime, Selene sarebbe stata liberata. La disperazione fece il resto. Ludovico organizzò un grandioso spettacolo, riempì il teatro di spettatori e appiccò un incendio, provocando in una sola notte 252 vittime. Ma Astaroth non considerò valido il tributo: le anime, disse, non potevano essere scelte da Ludovico; i nomi dei prescelti li avrebbe indicati lui stesso. Per quel tentativo di frodarlo, il prezzo fu moltiplicato: non più 216 anime ma 46.656.
Da quella notte Ludovico fu il primo esperimento del Grimorio ed il primo errore del demone. Giurò a se stesso che avrebbe trovato il modo di liberare Selene e rovesciare Astaroth.
