GENESIS OF THE GRIMORY “DER MASKENKODEX” OR “FIRST BOOK OF BALANCE”

The Grimoire is a book for the evocation and containment of metaphysical entities. It was compiled by the angel Raziel before the final clash between angels and demons. Myth has it that God gave Raziel a book containing the secrets of the Universe, and for this reason, the tome was called "Sefer Raziel HaMalakh" (the "Book of Raziel the Angel"). Raziel studied it in depth and then developed his own theogenesis, which led him to a formulary for the evocation or containment of metaphysical entities. He transcribed everything into a smaller book, arranging the formulas by use. He envisioned this instrument as a weapon to be used in battle once his enemies had been defeated. The tome was titled "First Book of Balance," and it was never known whether the adjective "first" indicated that others might exist. Raziel was not a combative angel, unlike Gabriel and Michael; his strength was not physical but mystical: his figure had been destined since the dawn of time to guard forbidden knowledge and cosmic revelation. His blessings could, therefore, take the form of veritable anathemas for his enemies. He therefore blessed that little book before entering the battlefield. In this way, the tome could not be forcibly taken by anyone. And so it happened that, precisely in the clashes between angels and demons, Raziel lost his book in the fight with Astaroth, who was defeated. As he retreated, the demon noticed that his rival had lost something and picked it up. Raziel's curse protected the book from theft, but if it had been dropped, it would not have been theft. Thus, the Great Duke of Hell immediately realized he had come into possession of something that would grant him enormous power, once he understood how to use it. The demon had always desired to overthrow Lucifer, and now, with that book, he could exploit an advantage. To avoid arousing suspicion, he produced a new black leather cover with the inscription "Der Maskenkodex" to conceal the true contents of those pages. Like Raziel, Astaroth was one of the most powerful and knowledgeable demons in the mystical branch. He began modifying the formulas written by the angel and made that book capable of producing metaphysical entities from human material. Raziel had already prepared the formulas to imprison any metaphysical entity, so the demon didn't worry about anything. He simply needed to test these formulas and see how powerful they were. He had no idea what would happen to a human subjected to such a procedure, just as he had no idea how many metaphysical entities, and to what degree, could be contained in "Der Maskenkodex." But if everything went as expected, he could create an army for himself, which he could deploy at will.

Il Grimorio è un libro di evocazione e contenimento di enti metafisici. Fu redatto dall’angelo Raziel prima dell’ultimo scontro tra angeli e demoni. Il mito narra che Dio avrebbe consegnato a Raziel un libro contenente i segreti dell’Universo e per tale motivo, quel tomo prese il nome di “Sefer Raziel HaMalakh” (il “Libro di Raziel l’angelo”). Raziel lo studiò affondo per poi elaborare una sua teogenesi che lo condusse ad un formulario per l’evocazione o per il contenimento degli enti metafisici. Trascrisse tutto in un libricino più piccolo ordinando le formule in base all’utilizzo. Immaginava, infatti, tale strumento come un’arma da poter usare in battaglia, una volta sconfitti i nemici. Il tomo fu intitolato “Primo Libro dell’Equilibrio” e non si seppe mai se quell’aggettivo “primo” indicasse che ve ne potessero esistere altri o meno. Raziel non era un angelo combattivo, a differenza di Gabriele e Michele, la sua forza non era fisica bensì mistica: la sua figura era destinata dalla notte dei tempi a custodire la conoscenza proibita e la rivelazione cosmica. Le sue benedizioni potevano, quindi, assumere la forma di veri e propri anatemi per i nemici. Benedisse, quindi, quel libricino prima di scendere sul campo di battaglia. In tal modo, il tomo non poteva essere sottratto con la forza da nessuno. E così accadde che proprio negli scontri fra angeli e demoni, Raziel perse il suo libro nel combattimento con Astaroth che ne uscì sconfitto. Nel ritirarsi, il demone si accorse che il suo rivale aveva perso qualcosa e raccolse l’oggetto. L’anatema di Raziel, difatti, proteggeva il libro dai tentativi di furto ma se fosse stato lasciato cadere, ciò non avrebbe rappresentato una sottrazione. Fu così che il Grande Duca dell’Inferno capì subito di essere entrato in possesso di qualcosa che gli avrebbe conferito un potere enorme, una volta capito come usarlo. Il demone bramava da sempre di rovesciare Lucifero ed ora, con quel libro, avrebbe potuto sfruttare un vantaggio. Per non destare sospetti, produsse una nuova copertina in pelle nera con la scritta “Der Maskenkodex” in modo da dissimulare il reale contenuto di quelle pagine. Anche Astaroth, come Raziel, era, tra i demoni, uno dei più potenti e sapiente conoscitore del ramo mistico. Iniziò a modificare le formule scritte dall’angelo e rese quel libro capace di produrre enti metafisici partendo da materiale umano. Raziel aveva, poi, già predisposto le formule per imprigionare qualsiasi ente metafisico, per cui il demone non si preoccupò di nulla. Aveva la necessità solo di sperimentare queste formule e constatarne fino a dove arrivasse la loro potenza. Non aveva idea, difatti, di cosa sarebbe accaduto ad un umano che veniva sottoposto a tale procedura così come non aveva idea di quanti enti metafisici e fino a quale livello potevano essere contenuti nel “Der Maskenkodex”. Ma se ogni cosa avrebbe rispettato le sue aspettative, avrebbe potuto crearsi un esercito a suo favore da poter disporre a suo piacimento.
